Cricket 2008/2009 Season

On Saturday Conrad played his last football match, which unfortunately Oatley RSL lost. In the afternoon both Callum and Conrad had cricket trial for the coming cricket season, which seems to have come around very quickly. I can’t believe football is already over and that in three weeks time cricket starts again. September is early for cricket and we anticipate having some very cold early morning matches. While I like watching the boys play cricket I am not so keen on standing at the sideline of a cold and windy field for 3 hours on a Saturday morning.

Anyway, Conrad is in the ‘A’ team this season because they did very well last year. IT will be interesting to see how they go this year seeing that they will have stiff competition form other “A” teams.

Callum has to play in the under 14s team because he is turning 12 before 1 September 2008 and therefore is in the ‘too old basket’ to play for the under twelves. So he is in 14C which he is happy with seeing he wil be only 12 years old when the competition starts.

He already had training yesterday and quite liked it. He seems to have a knowledgeable coach named Gerard.

The Euro 2008 semi-final between Germany and Turkey wasn’t being broadcast on free-to-air SBS TV so I investigated alternatives. The SBS website mentioned Satanta, which I had never heard of. But we really wanted to watch that match so I paid for a one month subscription. It worked out well. I already had a small PC I had used as a cheap media centre so I knew it would display ok on the TV. I also ran an ethernet cable from our ADSL2+ router rather than trust the 54 mbps wireless connection. Surprisingly the picture quality was ok. Not as good as normal SD TV but watchable. It was streaming at 450kbs and seemingly didn’t drop a frame.
